How Do You Decide?

How are you making decisions these days? I came across the following quote about decisions and it really resonated with me.

“Don’t ever make decisions based on fear. Make decisions based on hope and possibility. Make decisions based on what should happen, not what shouldn’t.”
-Michelle Obama

We make decisions all day long, so there is great opportunity to practice this approach. Dig a little deeper on the question above about how you’re currently making decisions. This isn’t intended to send you into a negative or judgmental spiral. Rather, it’s a chance to observe your headspace. Are you rooted in fear and worry or are you rooted in hope and possibility? (Again, no judgment!)

I invite you to work through this exercise. First, take three deep, cleansing breaths. Now, zero in and ask yourself how you want to feel, the reality you want to create and the goals you want to accomplish. I find it helpful to write each of those questions at the top of a blank page and then free write everything that pops into your head (write without thinking about grammar and without overthinking.) Set a timer for at least 5 minutes per question, so you have time to explore. You can edit it later, just allow the words to land on the paper, so you have a clear picture of what you’re seeking.

Once you’re happy with your lists, allow yourself to hold the hope and possibility of feeling, creating and achieving what you desire. Take a few more deep, cleansing breaths and imagine that your lists are now your reality, allow yourself to feel that vibration. Use your imagination and go through a day in your new reality. What will happen for you and what will you experience from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep? Relish in all that goodness.

Through this exercise, you’re creating the roots for new decisions. As you move forward, continue to be conscious of how you make decisions. If thoughts of fear or anger enter your mind, give yourself permission to acknowledge them, feel them and then show them the door. Practice making decisions and engaging in inspired actions that are rooted in hope and possibility. Continue to come back to your lists to keep you focused, positive and inspired. Your new world is waiting for you!
